Dizziness Diagram

Benign positional vertigo is the most common cause of dizziness. Fortunately, it is the most easily treated as well. It usually involves the posterior semicircular canal and is caused when the crystals in your inner ear become displaced. As these crystals fall through the semicircular canal, they cause a sensation of motion, even though you are not moving (vertigo). Unlike dizziness from other causes, the symptoms usually only last for up to 30 seconds if you are holding still. The feeling of motion can be very dramatic while it occurs, but once you hold still, it quickly stops. Unfortunately, it often returns with the next change of position. Rolling over in bed or laying down and sitting up are often classic triggers.

During your examination in the office, your doctor will usually be able to determine which side is affected. You may be taken through a series of movements, called the Epley maneuver, to help the crystals return to the proper location. This should cure the problem. You may also be either given the exercises to perform on your own or you may be sent to someone to help you through them.

Once you have completed the exercises, be sure to keep your head elevated for the next 2-3 days
