Septoplasty Recovery

Septoplasty is a surgical procedure performed to straighten the nasal septum.


Initial septoplasty recovery usually takes about one week or less. But, overall healing of the bone and cartilage will continue for several months to one year.

Post-Op Instructions

  • 1x Hot steamy shower per day until post-op appointment.
  • 3x Ointment to nose per day until post-op appointment.
  • 6x Sprays of saline to nose per day until post-op appointment.

Additional Tips

  • No sinus rinsing until after the first post-op appointment.
  • No blowing your nose for 3 days
  • No driving until completely off all pain medications
  • If you need to sneeze, drop your mouth open to relieve the pressure in your nose
  • Activity: walking, lifting up to 1 gallon of milk. NO bending over.
  • Sleeping: You will feel better if you keep yourself elevated for the next week. Sleep propped up.
  • Dressing: Wear the nasal (mustache) dressing until there is no more drainage from your nose.
  • If you bleed: lean forward over a sink and apply pressure to the tip of your nose for 5-1 minutes. You may use 1 spray of Afrin if needed.
